Hidden Gems...Austin, Texas

Gabe and I were in Austin, Texas last week...so in today's post I'm going to talk a little bit more in detail about what we were doing there. We were invited by Chevrolet to visit our city of choice (there were many options: Boston, New Orleans, Atlanta...and of course, Austin). I don't know what was the decision process but we were very glad to end up there...especially because Ashley (from Ashes Into Fashion) and her husband were able to drive from Dallas to stay with us.  The idea was to enjoy the city, visit #HiddenGems while driving the Trax around town. So I want to share some of my favorite places. Let's start:

Gabo y yo estuvimos en Austin, Texas la semana pasada y aquí les cuento en más detalle que hacíamos por allá. Chevrolet nos invitó a conocer nuestra ciudad de preferencia (habían varias opciones: Boston, New Orleans, Atlanta...y Austin). No se como terminamos en Austin pero me alegra mucho haber ido a esta ciudad...especialmente porque invitamos a nuestros amigos, Ashley de AshesIntoFashion y a su esposo. La idea era disfrutar de la ciudad, buscar sus tesoros escondidos, mientras paseamos en el Trax. Hoy les cuento de los lugares que más me gustaron :).. Empecemos.

HOTEL SAN JOSE:

We stayed at the Hotel San Jose. Look how pretty it was...it had a laid back vibe, the rooms were gorgeous and all the rooms are totally different (which is pretty cool).

Nos quedamos en el Hotel San Jose...¡¡miren que bello!! Tiene una honda un poco hipster, las habitaciones eran hermosas y por cierto todas son distintas...super cool.

The Cathedral of Junk:

Well, I already posted a full article on it. It was so freaking cool. I still can't believe it is hidden in backyard of a house.  I just wished we could have stayed longer- the artist had an interview and he had to leave...and since it was his house, so did we. It is free to visit but I would encourage giving out a donation!

Bueno ya les conté de este sitio en un post completo del lugar. Pero todavía no puedo creer lo cool que era y que esté en el patio de una casa. Ojalá hubiésemos podido quedarnos más tiempo pero el dueño tenía que ir a una entrevista ...y al ser su casa, todos nos tuvimos que ir.  La entrada es gratis pero está la opción de dejar una donación.

AUSTIN WATER BIKES:

Okay this place was extremely hard to find. It is basically under the bridge (yes, the famous bridge where the bats sleep and they come out at sunset flying out...super cool). I've never seen (and obviously never ridden) a water bike. They are easy to ride, and very safe (you can even stand in one side and it doesn't even more). The weather was perfect for this. It was around $17 per bike per hour...not cheap but it was fun and definitely worth it.

Okay primero lo primero, estuvimos un ratote intentando encontrar este lugar....es debajo del puente y no es fácil llegar. Ese puente es famoso porque murciélagos salen volando de ahí todos los días...miles de murciélagos. . Nunca había visto una bicicleta de agua... y obviamente jamás me había montado en una. Pero la experiencia fue genial...son fáciles de manejar (la corriente no era fuerte) y son super seguras (en ningún momento sientes que te vas a caer al agua). El clima estuvo perfecto ese día también. Cuesta alrededor de $17 por hora por bicicleta...no es barato pero es una experiencia distinta y divertida.

FEATHERS BOUTIQUE:

Perfect for vintage find...they had ton of cute vintage denim shorts, 80s jackets, a lot of 70s flared jeans. Super cool store.

Si te gusta la ropa vintage, esta esta super chevere. Tienen desde shorts de mezclilla, chaquetas ochentosas, jeans acampanados de los 70s, y mucho más.

MAIKO SUSHI:

After a long day exploring, we had Sushi for dinner...yes, I know Texas is known for tex-mex and bbq but we were craving Sushi (and the night before we had dinner at a Mexican place called "Gueritos"...I had an amazing chicken soup there) But back to Maiko, the Shrimp Tempura was one of the best I've had.

Después de un día largo explorando la ciudad, nos antojamos de comer sushi en la cena. Lo se, Texas es famoso por su comida tex-mex y por las carnes...pero no se porque queríamos japonés (aparte que la noche anterior fuimos a cenar en un sitio mexicano llamado "Gueritos"...donde la sopa de pollo estaba de otro mundo!). Pero hablando otra vez de Marko, el roll de tempura de camarones estaba riquísimo...de los mejores que he comido.

HOPE OUTDOOR GALLERY OR BAYLOR STREET ART WALLS:

This place reminded me a little bit to Wynwood here in Miami because of all the graffiti walls...it is definitely a must when it comes to cool places to visit. We got to meet one of the artists and he even let me played with one of the spray cans haha.

Este lugar me recordó muchísimo a Wynwood aquí en Miami por todas las paredes con grafitis...me encantó! También pudimos conocer y hablar con uno de los artistas....hasta me dejo jugar un poquito con una de las pinturas en spray.

GLASS BLOWING CLASS (East Side Glass Studio):

This experience was ridiciously INCREDIBLE. I really did not know what to expect. I knew we were going to learn how to do some glass sculptures but little did I know about how they are done. Lee, our teacher, was so sweet and passionate about her work ( I love meeting people who love what they do...plus she is extremely talented).  We had a private class where the four of us did two pieces (one was more like an ornament where we did random cuts with a scissor..mine looked like a gummy bear...and Gaby's like a Lobster haha). Then we actually blew the glass to do a round piece. I choose B&W colors for it to match my home decor.  The glass takes a while to cool done (they put it in a thing that slowly lowers the temperature until it's room temperature). We were leaving the next day so we couldn't pick them up but Lee was the best and she is shipping it home for us.

No tienen idea lo increíble que fue esta experience. Yo de verdad no tenía idea que esperarme...pense que íbamos a hacer esculturas como de barro. Y personalmente no tenía ni idea como se manejaba el vidrio. Nuestra profesora, Lee, fue un amor. Ella es de esas personas que aman tanto lo que hacen que te contagian y te inspiran (aparte que tienen mega talento!!!). Era una clase privada donde los cuatro tuvimos la oportunidad de hacer dos piezas (una era más como un adoro donde hacíamos cortes con la tijera...el mío parecía una gomita de esas de osito!). Luego si soplamos para hacer las redondas...yo para ambos, esogí colores B&W para que combinara con la decoración de mi casa. Las malas noticias es que tardan un día en estar listas porque el vidrio tiene que enfriarse poco a poco en una máquina especial. Nosotros viajamos la mañana siguiente y  no podíamos buscarlo, pero la bella de Lee nos la va a mandar a la casa <3
