My Breastfeeding Experience- Update 1

Monday, July 2, 2018

I've been trying to keep a balance in my social media when it comes to fashion, beauty, and baby. However, in real life: I'm in my PJs, no makeup and just enjoying Nico. and the reality behind a pretty photo is not perfection.

I've been debating if I should share this post because the mommy shamming in the WWW is real- and the comments can be very harsh when you know you are doing absolutely everything to be the best mom possible. However,  I want to share my frustration just in case someone out there is going through something similar and I want to reassure you are not alone.

My plan was to breastfeed 100%; I attended breastfeeding class at the hospital and the first thing I did when they gave me Nico in the delivery room was to try to make him latch.  But like I always say, things don't always go as plan.  They took him for some tests and his blood sugar was low so they gave him the bottle instantly.  During my stay at the hospital, there wasn't a nurse who didn't try to help me. For many reasons (a nipple on the flat side and a bit of tongue tie),  we simply couldn't. The hospital also offered lactation specialists who visited with no luck. Well, the second lactation specialist was really helpful; she was able to get the colostrum out and helped me with my first pumping session. I still had hope that things will change when we got home- with strangers, and people coming in and out of the room, it can be stressful.

But oh, well...the pump became my best friend and dearest enemy. Some days I feel I live connected to this torture machine; but I live through the pain because I know my milk gives him the best nutrients out there. At the beginning, I was super excited because I was able to have a little milk bank in the fridge. But every week, Nico kept wanting more and more, and I was producing exactly the same quantity. Very fast, my reserves disappeared and some times I have to give him formula because I'm not having "the most efficient pump day".  Yeah, some days are good, some days not so much.

Knowing that you are not producing enough takes a toll in stress. So I asked my dear IG family if they had any secrets to increase milk production. Some of you recommended me lactation cookies or teas, while the majority just told me to drink more water and have him on the boob as much as he wanted. And that was exactly what hurt, knowing that what he needed was what I couldn't do.

I never stop trying, but he would never latch on...until two days ago at 6 weeks old! I couldn't contain my happiness, I wrote close friends because I was simply so excited.  Then on the next two feedings, HE DID IT AGAIN (not for long, but nevertheless it felt like a success). Then I pictured myself writing this article and ending it with a motivational quote to never stop trying.

After 3 successfully tries, he just stopped wanting the boob or even wanting to try. I don't know if it's because he is not getting enough milk or simply because he is so used to the bottle. He gets EXTREMELY angry and frustrated. The IG family came down again for the rescue and I know I have to continue trying but it breaks my heart to see him like that. I'm reaching out to a lactation consultant in Miami this week to check his latch, my positioning, and many other reasons that could be the reasoning behind his frustration.

I don't know if the update #2 will have a happy ending, but I wanted to share this story because every thing we see are successful stories- while the not-so-perfect stories remain unwritten and untold.

I want to thank everyone who has given me advice, it really means the world.

___________________________________

  1. Really enjoyed your post! I’m a new mom as well to a 1 month old and breastfeeding didn’t work out for me as well. I had such a rough time coming to terms with my decision. It’s not easy !!

  2. Lindas palabras. No estás sola,
No te rindas.

  3. Gracias por compartir tu experiencia. Me pasó EXACTAMENTE igual.

  7. Has anyone ever mentioned using a nipple shield and/ or getting a prescription for Domperidone?

Stay strong and do what’s best for you and Nico. In the long run, you have to chose what is functional and practical for both of you.

  14. You’re doing great mama! My son is 1.5 years old and still nursing lol. One thing that worked for me 100% after my supply dropped was Gatorade(because of electrolytes in them) and this pill I got on amazon! Here’s the link:

  15. Hi Nany! Congratulations on baby Nico and a big hug for talking about out your struggles in the internet world since yes I agree it can be quite unnerving to receive sometimes not the nicest advice or opinions from other women. Sometimes it’s women that haven’t even been through what you’re talking about. I’m currently pregnant with baby number three due any time now and would love to share with you my story with babies number 1 and 2. I had my twins at 35 weeks and because they were early and had low blood sugar as well they were taken to the NICU for 16 days. All the while they were mostly fed with either a bottle or a tube. I was given a pump at the hospital and all I did those first two weeks was pump and hold them close for skin to skin and pump some more. The nurses need to keep track of how much milk they were intaking so I wouldn’t feed them straight on the boob. My relationship with the pump grew to a point I felt like I was even pumping too hard to try and get more milk for them. The nurses even decided to fortify my breast milk with formal to have them fatten up a bit more. So in a way they were getting both. Once we were home I was determined to make the switch to only boob and the rare pumping in between. It wasn’t easy at first and yes I did go through quite an emotional struggle being with them and being sleep deprived, tired and frustrated all the while sad because I wanted to be the best mother I could for my twins, but I somehow didn’t let myself give up from still trying. A lactation consultant told me once (the boys are 3 now) that the moment I tell myself that I can just feed them the formula **because I CAN’T do this** is the moment I start going downhill. Even if it doesn’t always work and even if it’s hard, think positive. Positive even while feeding him the formula. You can do this. I would try a couple of things and see if they benefit you at all. Right before breastfeeding or pumping I always drank a glass of water. Then before even attaching myself, I would sit and look a pictures of them on my phone to get calm and gooey inside. Or I would pump when they or he was asleep by me and just caress their little feet and put on mommy baby music. That song from Tarzan by Phil Collins, You’ll be in my heart, worked wonders in making me relaxed. Then as I would pump I wouldn’t look down at how much was coming out instead I would either close my eyes and sing or keep looking through images thinking about something completely different than what I was doing. Little by little my supply got bigger. Because I relaxed mainly. The moment the babies were screaming and upset even when we were well into our breastfeeding journey sometimes my boobs would just lock up. It’s as if they sensed the stress and stopped working. So under those conditions any Mom would have trouble producing. Give yourself grace and a big hug again for persisting and wanting to do all that you can to make this work for both of you. My story does have a happy ending, they self weaned at 10 months. From two weeks of nothing to almost a year of fattening up those two hungry monsters. I could only hope that with this next one we will have a pleasant story to share as well, but we will just have to wait and see!

  16. Congrats on your baby! Breastfeeding is the most precious connection between mom and baby but like you said not everything goes as planed and some people make breastfeeding a breeze, which automatically makes you think how easy it will be. Well that’s super wrong and all I can say is not to give up trying. I almost gave up, the first three months were pure torture because it was sooo painful and I felt so bad because I cried every time it was feeding time. So I started pumping and give him my boob once or twice a day but I also have him bottle. Doctors and everyone around you will tell you how it’s wrong to give him bottle and what not, but no one will ever understand your frustration, so I learned to just do what your mother instinct tells you. No baby will die if you feed them formula.Eventually I was able to feed him through out the whole day and I was so happy! But I was happy I did what my instinct told me because o was getting so frustrated because I was not doing it “the right way” I even went through postpartum depression. The moment I realized I was never going to be the perfect mom and I didn’t have to please no one but just make sure my baby was ok, that’s the day I felt better about everything. I will say giving her m bottle helped him get off the boob easier and it also made it easier for me to go back to work. So don’t give up, keep trying no and if at the end you’re not able to breastfeed him, don’t feel bad because he will be ok and you never stopped trying. Who knows maybe he will latch out of nowhere. Remember, you are stronger than you think you are!

  20. Pumping is so much hard work I exclusively pumped for 7 months. I got mastitis twice and even ended up in the hospital without being able to see my baby for three days when he was just two weeks old. It’s hard when they get use to the bottle because it’s faster and even I kept trying to give him the boob I was scared of continuously getting that terrible infection. You are doing great I drank Malta, mother milk tea, and oatmeal everyday. That really helped with the supply but then it was terrible in the sense it didn’t help with the weight loss I was trying to do as well.

  22. Your current experience is what many new mothers go through when it comes to breastfeeding. When my first child was born, I had many breastfeeding issues too. My 1st daughter was born tiny. My boobs were each double the size of her tiny head. And she could barely latch on with her tiny mouth. I didn’t give up but it was hard and I was impatient. We continued to breastfeed until we could no longer do it (which was 4-6 months).
I now have my 3 week old 2nd daughter and the journey has been better only because of several reasons. Things that I wished I had learned with the first baby.
    1. Not having to breastfeed or giving baby formula only, will not make you less of a mother. Formula only is okay. Breastfeeding only is okay. Mix of both is okay.
    2. Be patient with yourself and your little one. Sometimes all you need is time.
    3. Find portable pump and pump bra so you can do other things while pumping. (I usually watch a tv show or read a book). Pumping will help you to stimulate more breast milk.
    4. Don’t worry too much about all the pressure of being a breastfeeding mom only. It is a demanding journey but enjoy it as well.

I hope your little one and you have a good breastfeeding journey. If you wanna continue it, don’t give up.
