What I’ve learned in my CURLY JOURNEY

Tuesday, June 21, 2022

Sponsored by Hair Food. All opinions are my own.

In 2020, I started a process of self-love and accepting my curls.  When I was young, I was very self-conscious about them. I felt I didn’t look professional or pretty enough.

I stopped straightening my hair, I got my first curly cut, and I switched all my hair products.

I switched to Hair Food because it is free of sulfates, parabens, dyes and they are cruelty free. They also give my curls the hydration they need.

You can also see my other curly articles here:

But recently, something in me has changed. I don’t want to be defined by my curls. My natural curls are a part of me but that’s not all that I am.

- I learned that my curls are beautiful, professional, and versatile.

I learned that I don’t need to straighten my hair to fulfill the standards of beauty.

I’ve learned how to take better care of them. I started thinking of what I put in my hair just like I think of what I eat. I love how Hair Food contains superfood ingredients (like coconut oil, aloe, mango, avocado, etc). And so many of you have been compliment how long and healthy my hair looks…this is it! This is what I use.

I’ve learned to pay more attention to what my hair needs.

For example, if I feel it needs a bit more of a “deep clean”, I’ve been loving Hair Food Tea Tree Oil & Lavender Water Purifying Shampoo. Tea tree oil is an amazing ingredient and the lavender just makes is the perfect scent.

And for the days I feel it needs a bit of extra hydration, I love the Avocado & Argan Oil Hair Mask. I especially use it if I use heat and KNOW my hair needs a bit of pampering!

I definitely want to start playing with my hairstyles more- either straight or curly- and not because of one is better than the other, but because it is FUN!

My detailed CURLY HAIR ROUTINE/ CURLY JOURNEY

Tuesday, June 15, 2021

*Sponsored by Hair Food. All opinions are my own.*

It has been an honor partnering with Hair Food for almost a year. I’ve found some of my current favorite products and I know I’ll continue using and including them in my hair routine.

One of the many reasons I’ve loved this partnership is that the Hair Food products are free of sulfates, parabens, mineral oils, and dyes- which is the first thing you should do when bring back your curls back to life!

Here are all of my tips!

- Learn to love your natural hair pattern:
This was very hard for me at the beginning. Society has taught us that volume is bad, that curls are unprofessional, and that it is easier to just “straighten your hair”. This is definitely easier said than done, but it is beautiful how I healed, as my curls “healed”.

- Identify your curl pattern and its needs - this will help you understand what your hair needs exactly. For example: your hair might need extra hydration, and for that I recommend a hair mask like Hair Food’s Avocado & Argan Oil Smoothing Hair Mask.

- Stop washing your hair that often.
It doesn’t have to be a full week between washes, just add an extra day here and there.

- Avoid heat tools as much as you can.
This one has been hard for me because of the constant photoshoots, I feel my hair needs to lock as good as possible. So, I try to ONLY curl the strands that are acting up and being rebellious.

Now let’s talk about EXACTLY what I do:

1) WASH:
I only wash my hair once a week because that’s what works for me.  When I wash it, I like using Hair Food’s Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse. I use it instead of my shampoo, leave it in for 3 minutes and my hair feels like new.

If I need to wash it earlier than a week, I sometimes skip shampoo and just use the Manuka Honey & Apricot Moisturizing Conditioner. I massage my scalp with it and just rinse!

2) GEL IT OUT
After getting out of the shower, I use a gel to make sure my curl holds its shape as much as it cans. I apply it generously from roots to ends and I scrunch it. I regularly let it dry BUT if I’m in a hurry, I’ll use a diffuser (not my fave as I’m really avoiding heat).

3) BREAK THE CURLS:

At this point, my curls are tight, and I like going in and break them with the Hair Food Avocado & Argan Sulfate Free Smoothing Color Safe Hair Oil. It adds another layer of hydration, and makes my hair looks extra shiny!

4) A BIT OF CURLING:

Yes, I know I said to avoid heat tools as much as possible BUT it’s okay to curl some strands. I regularly just do the top layer or a few strands around my face to frame it better. I make sure to use Hair Food’s Coconut & Argan Oil Heat Protectant as it protects your hair from heat damage up to 450 degrees!

And that’s all I do!

Tell me about your CURL ROUTINE!

Non-wash HAIR ROUTINE…GOING WATERLESS

Monday, March 23, 2020

This post is sponsored by Waterl<ss. All opinions are my own.

For the past 6 months, I’ve been trying to embrace my naturally curly hair. The more I learn about my curl pattern and curly hair, the more I understand the important of not washing my hair as often. When you wash your hair too often, you might remove natural oils that benefit it.

I personally like to wash it every 5-7 days- instead of following a strict schedule, I wash it when I feel I really need it. I do it for the curl benefits, because it saves water (more on that later), and because with a little toddler, sometimes I don’t have much time to get ready.

Every time I share how often I wash my hair on social media, I get questions like “but you work out every day, how do you keep it fresh and pretty?”.

So let me tell you about the Waterl<ss products I’m using and absolutely loving!

But first, let me tell you a bit about the brand.

Waterl<ss started to improve the non-wash day experience for a diverse set of people and hair types. In the testing phase of the launch, Cape Town, South Africa announced it was 3 months away from running out of water for their city of 4 million people. The products proved to give clean, conditioned, and great smelling hair without using a single drop of water.

My Waterl<ss routine:
I’ve tried MANY dry shampoos and I was very impressed with the no-residue formula of the Waterl<ss No Residue Dry Shampoo. It contains no parabens and no sulfates. You just shake the can well, spray on your roots, and you can brush out or run your fingers through it. I try to userun my fingers, so I don’t mess with my curl pattern - but if I’m using a curling iron to reshape the curls, I brush them out a bit.

I was super excited to try the Waterl<ss Instant Moisture Dry Conditioner as it tames flyaways, frizz, and dry ends (3 things that are definitely related to curly girl problems!). To use it: shake the can, spray your hair from mid to the ends, and run your fingers/brush it out. My hair feels moisturized without the need of water, and it doesn’t weigh it down. Total new favorite!

Tell me about your non-wash routine! How often do you wash your hair? Would you try these out! You can grab these products online at Walmart, here.
XO,

Nany.

Holiday Gift Guide 2016: Beauty

Tuesday, December 6, 2016

Happy Holidays everyone! How’s your Holiday shopping going?

This year I decided to bring back my Holiday gift guides. The past years I’ve always started with BEAUTY- why? Because they are basically the easiest gifts to give  since you don’t have to worry about sizing. But that doesn’t mean you can’t make every gift thoughtful and personalized.

Also these gifts are great for yourself- every Holiday I like gifting myself something special (I wrap it and everything). I believe that if you have been eyeing something for a while,  you worked hard to save for it, why not treat yourself too? You deserve it!

1. Dyson Supersonic Hairdryer
When I moved to the U.S, the first thing I bought was a hairdryer. I was 17 and I learned how to blow-dry my curls- a thing I still do at least every week.  As soon as I saw the Dyson Supersonic, I was drawn to it and I couldn’t wait to try it (and now I couldn’t wait to recommend it…this is the future in hairdryers!!).

The Dyson hairdryer is small and light (perfect for traveling), it dries ultra fast (which is important when you have as much hair as I do- now that I see how quick I can blow-dry my hair..I’m thinking about growing it out again!). It also has 3 speed settings (fast, regular, and gentle drying), and 4 precise heat settings (212F, 176F, 140F, and constant cold).

Customized Hair Care…with ProfilePro

beauty, conditioner, hair, hair care, profilepro, shampoo, beauty review

My hair is very curly …which is a fact not many people know about me- but yes, it is very curly, frizzy, and rebellious. It is also not as thick as curly hair tends to be. When I was a teen, I always felt there weren’t many products on the market for my hair-type.

We don’t all fit in JUST ONE category…we all have different needs and it can be difficult to find hair products that target all of our concerns.

This is why I was so excited to try the ProfilePro Hair Care products because they are completely tailored to your hair and its specific needs.

When you sign up, you submit a form with  some easy questions about your hair type, hair texture, hair behavior, and scalp condition. To make it more personalized, you can also give more information like your shampoo routine, current hair color, styling routine, and more.  But this is not all, you get to choose your own scent. You can choose from Jasmine, Citrus, Coconut, Lavender, or Vanilla. I choose the Lavender scent and I LOVE IT; it makes me feel like I’m at a spa. Finally, it gets even more fun when you can add your name or nickname to your bottles!

And TA-DA, the experts tailor a formula specific made with top-quality ingredients, free of sulfates and parabens, safe for color treated hair, and not tested on animals (double Yay for that!).  I’m loving it! <3

Would you customized your own shampoo & conditioner? Head over to ProfilePro for more! XOXO

P.S I almost forgot. There was also a little product that caught my eye on the site, the Ultra Nourishing Oil. I use hot tools more than I should, and it has taken a toll on my hair. After just one use, I loved how it made my hair shiny and sleek (no frizz!!) . 100% recommended!

______

When I moved to the U.S, I was in shock with the great variety of products…for wavy, curly, dry, oily, textured, frizzy, colored, sulfate-free, etc. Over the course of 9 years, I’ve tried a crazy amount of hair products. Sometimes I loved how soft one made my hair, but I hated the smell. Other times I loved the smell, but the product made my scalp dry. And others, it kept my hair moisturized but it made my color fade.

Sunday, April 14, 2013

After almost a decade, I wanted to have a small transformation...so I did ombrĂ© on my hair with the L'Oreal Paris Wild Feria kit (Don't forget to check out my tutorial if you haven't seen it...click HERE). I was very worried thinking about how my hair texture would change and how the ombrĂ© could damage my hair. Reason why I have been trying a couple of new products...so today I share my hair-routine to take care of my new ombrĂ© hair.

I've been collaborating with L'Oreal for a couple of months now- reason why I have been trying a lot of their new products. So I want to make a small note saying that this is my honest opinion, this hasn't been edited by third parties, and I have tried all the products and recommend them. This has been my hair routine lately and you can also take it as a general tip/guide (but if you want to try a new product...these are my favorites).

1) Shampoo/conditioner (L'Oreal Paris Color Vibrancy Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner, $7.49 each). Having any type of hair-color change can really damage your hair; so my first recommendation is washing it less than usual. For example: I wash my hair once a week (that's what works for me because my hair is very dry). However, you can wash it twice a week or at least every other day if your hair is very oily. When washing it, look for a shampoo and conditioner that hydrates it as much as possible- even better if it's for colored hair, like this one.

2) Deep conditioner  (L'Oreal paris Total Repair 5 Damage Erasing Balm, $6.99). Even though if you use a hydrating shampoo, your hair might need extra help. Go for a deep conditioner and leave it on your hair at least 5 minutes (I would recommend 10-15min...just get out of the showe, and tweeze your eyebrows or something while waiting). I have been using this balm by L'Oreal for months...and I LOVE it. I use it at least once a month and I feel my hair softer and healthier right after using it.

3) I live in Miami, where it's humid most of the time. So I need a product that helps me with the frizz, especially when it's straight. To avoid looking like a lion, I've been using "L'Oreal Paris Smooth Intense Xtreme Straight CrĂ©me".  I always like finding products that work in more than one way (so you can use just one product ). Also, it protects your hair from the heat of the styling tools, it makes your hair very smooth, and without frizz.

4) Like I was saying, I don't like wearing that many products at a time. When I do a high bun, or strong curls...I want the hairstyle to last, which means: HAIRSPRAY. When it comes to hairspray, I've been using L'Oreal  Elnett Satin Hairspray Extra Strong" for more than a year. Some hairsprays leave your hair looking "hard"...but this one makes your hair look soft, natural, and manageable

5) Talking about multi-use products; it doesn't matter if I'm styling it straight or wave...I need to use a heat protectant (L'Oreal Color Vibrancy Dual Protect Spray). This one is great because it not only protects from the 450F styling tools but also helps maintain the new hair color.

6) Finally, I like adding an "oil" for than extra shiny, especially on the tips. (Recommendation: "L'Oreal Total  Repair 5-Multi Restorative Dry Oil" because it helps repair split ends and general damage)

This is what I've been using when it comes to products but I want to try a couple of natural remedies (like avocado..or maybe mayonnaise haha). So except a #BeautySunday about that too!! Have an amazing week! XOXO

_____________

1) ShampĂş y acondicionador (L'Oreal Paris Color Vibrancy Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner, $7.49 c/u).

Friday, May 13, 2011

Since I started this blog, I have received so many compliments about my hair-something I never would have imagined because I was never the one with "beautiful hair"; on the contrary, I had very curly hair which I hated. When I moved to Miami, I had to learn how to style my hair because salons are very expensive in the US (compared to the ones in Venezuela).

I want to share my hair care routine but remember that this will not work on oily hair.
